An Unhealthy Truth

What is most unhealthy: Dr. Pepper, Full Throttle, or a delicious double chocolate chip frappuccino?

I have been doing a lot of nutritional study the past week, and reached the horrifying conclusion that those delicious drinks we so often indulge in, are quite more unhealthy than we thought. My study consists of the following nutritional information:

(All nutritional facts are based on a 16 fl oz. serving of the listed product)

Product:

Contents:

Dr Pepper

Full Throttle

Double Chocolate Chip Frappuchino (Grande)

Dr. Pepper Source
Full Throttle Source
Starbucks Frappuccino Source

So what can be drawn from this is that besides the Sodium (which I would conclude is mostly the excess caffeine in Full Throttle), there is nothing more substantially unhealthy about Full Throttle than there is about Dr. Pepper. Both are made with high fructose corn syrup, which is a disgusting substitute for sugar, that is highly damaging to the liver.

The very frightening conclusion from this is learning of the 580 calories in a Grande-sized Starbucks Double-Chocolate Chip frappuccino. In fact, from browsing through the linked source for Starbucks, I found that many of their drinks are very high in calories and carbohydrates. And to think that there was a possibility of such indulgence like Starbucks, without a price. I for one, would like to see Super Size Me 2 take aim at Starbucks. Perhaps a 30-day, all-Starbucks diet?

BUT. BUT. I, I LOVVE Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Drinks. My sister has said for months now that it is a heart attack waiting to happen. But I refuse to believe it. I'm happy in my chocolate covered world. It's just a fancy chocolate milkshake. Yep (keeping telling yourself this, Owl), it's just a wonderful, once every now and then chocolate drink that will not do you ultimate harm.

:-)

Yea, I know how you feel. I used to love drinking those frappuccino's (Double Chocolate Chip being my favorite). I was horrified to learn that the Venti one's are 720 calories!!!!

Meh, if it's worth 4 bucks a drink, it's worth the heart attack. I'm game.

It's almost surprising that Starbucks - as delightful as it may be -it actually willing to sell you bad health for such a high price, at least McDonald's sells it cheap...
I have also heard that the chick-fil-a milkshakes are well over a thousand calories a piece.
Kind of makes me sad. Maybe I'll go eat some vegetables!

Hey Elizabeth, good point. Thanks for commenting. May I ask what your last name is? I don't believe I remember meeting you, but I apologize if otherwise and I simply forgot. Your welcome to comment here anytime, though. ;)

lol, yall know whats funny is that beer is healthier than all of those drinks, well Light beer is, at least. The thing is that everyone gets so disgusted about beer because of the alcohol, and the taste, but you know what provides the sweet taste in stuff like Dr. Pepper, Frappuccino's, ice cream, etc... is only the sugar, its empty carbs. That stuff is the stuff that will hurt you in the long run, whereas the liver eventually repairs itself so beer isn't quite so damaging, as long as you don't drink it like crazy and get drunk like so many idiots out there.

Last name: Moseley, I am Asa's sister, I think we met briefly at Memphis this summer.

That is funny about the beer thing.
I guess all this goes to show "all things in moderation"

unfortunately, you are not showing all the ingredients for all the products (particularly full throttle). only then can you perfectly compare them

I'm not showing the ingredients for any of the products. I'm showing the nutritional value that stems from the various ingredients.

however, full throttle contains 144 mg of caffeine per can, which is over half the maximum daily amount recommended by the FDA.
coke, dr.pepper, and sprite have about 45 mg to every eight ounces.

caffeine can increase levels of epinephrine by 200%, causing fat and sugar to be released into the bloodstream, which creates stress and slows or shuts down the digestive system. it takes 12 hours for your liver to detoxify 120 mg of caffeine, and over two weeks to for your stress hormone levels to return to normal.

ok well this is really long. haha.

That was a very well written comment, Claire, it actually required me to do a little research. However, a standard Full Throttle can is 16oz. Whereas, you compared its caffeine to that of 8oz. of other products. I believe it would be equally comparing to say that 16oz. of Sprite/Dr. Pepper/Coke have about 90mg of caffeine, compared to 141mg in every 16oz. of Full Throttle. (actually, comparing Full Throttle to other energy drinks, it actually has the least amount of caffeine of them, and is the safest).

Also, a small 8oz. cup of coffee has 135mg of caffeine, and that is safe enough for over 80% of Americans to drink without health problems in direct relation.

"caffeine can increase levels of epinephrine by 200%, causing fat and sugar to be released into the bloodstream, which creates stress and slows or shuts down the digestive system."

Caffeine does increase Epineprine, but it is the Paraxanthine (composing 84% of the coffee that is metabolized in the liver in the three primary metabolites) which increases lipolysis, which leads to increases in glycerol (carbs, or rather sugars) and fatty acids levels (or fats) in the blood stream, and that actually works as a source of fuel by the muscles.

"it takes 12 hours for your liver to detoxify 120 mg of caffeine"

May I request a confirmation of your sources, because I believe I read that it is 3-4 hours for the liver to metabolism (or detoxify) caffeine. While "In women taking oral contraceptives this is increased to 5–10 hours, and in pregnant women roughly 9–11 hours."

"and over two weeks to for your stress hormone levels to return to normal."

Though through personal experience I find this difficult to believe, I cannot debate it. Very good point. ;)

"ok well this is really long. haha."

Yes it was, can you please try to not be so smart. :P
