A Brown Recluse bite of pain

Warning: Some of the contents of this post are rather graphic, please take that into consideration prior to reading this post.

Last week, sometime over fall break, I look at my waist to see a small bump of some sort. Nothing unusual, just something that I always see. So of course my natural expectation is that it will go away soon, no problem....

Well it wasn't quite that simple. On Thursday, I had noticed this "bump" had grown rather extensively in size, and was now rather sore. On Friday I went to the free Student Health Clinic on the Univ. of Memphis campus, where my bump was looked at by a nurse and was diagnosed as "some sort of infection" and I was prescibed for some antibiotic medicine.

Over the weekend was when this bump became most painful. It was nearly impossible to sleep at night, and I was forced to wear the loosest pairs of pants I own. On Monday, I went back to the clinic, as requested of me, and was asked to come back again Tuesday to see the doctor to "have it opened up and drained." I returned this morning, right after my Business Finance exam, at which the doctor examined it and said that it was too dry to drain, and he diagnosed it as "probably a brown recluse bite." He gave me a new prescription (a much stronger one), and asked me to stop taking my current one. I was also asked to return Thursday for further evaluation.

So here I lie this Tuesday evening, my brown recluse bite not being quite so painful anymore, but more itchy, as the skin is more-or-less dry and tender at this point, as it will stay for about the next month or so. Yall please pray for me. God bless.

UPDATE:

'Preciate the prayers. I am feeling much better.

As for the bite, well my mom found and killed a Brown Recluse spider in our kitchen earlier this morning. With these two incidents involving the same type of spider, we are convinced that there is a Brown Recluse nest somewhere in our house (such a comforting thought, isnt it?). It's probably in the attic and due to the recent cold weather (see two posts down), they are trying to find a warm place to go so they are infesting our house.

Anyway, for those who don't know, the Brown Recluse is one of only two types of poisonous spiders in the world, the only other being the Black Widow. We have a guy coming to spray/gas the house Tuesday, but until then, hopefully if anyone is bitten, it is me. Reason being that while anyone in my family would be in serious trouble, I however have some heavy duty Antibiotics running through my body so I can just laugh right in that Brown Recluse's little face. :P

God bless,
~Joe

So sorry to hear about that, Joe. Hope you get to feeling better soon. And, I hope all the spiders are destroyed!

So Sorry for you Joe. Thankfully I've never been bitten by one. I hear that they like to get into clothing that might be on the floor, thinking that it might be a good place to nest. Then unsuspecting people pick up the clothes and put them on, with the spider inside! Yikes. Isaac had a bite too some time ago. You might want to ask him what helped when he went through it.

Thanks Laura and Bro. Tony. The bite is much better now, although the doctor said it would take about a month or two to fully heal. Nonetheless, I'll try to get in touch with Bro. Isaac about it tomorrow if I can, thanks for the good advice. God bless.

Hi Joe,
I got bit. Doctor gave me antibiotic. But, it was a Monday and this doctor is so busy by 11:30 when he saw me. He glanced at it and I don't think he knew what he was looking at. I told him that Veternarians get bit all the time and treat themselves with shots of a tiny dose of some steroid (Dexamethasone?)anyway that just bounced off the doctors head. He was in his Monday morning whirl and wanted to get to lunch ASAP. It bothers me that when you go to the doctor for a brown recluse bite all he is going to do is look in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) give you something that will not cure it like a steroid would. My doctor said it wasnt a spider bite because skin would be sloughing off. I was a little in shock by this time and couldn't tell him it already has done that I cleaned off the dead skin before I got there with a water pick filled with Hydrogen Peroxide. (My own crazy idea). Also I used a Snake Bite kit to pull out the poison. I ordered the Spider Traps But I am wondering what Chemicals I can Spray in the bedroom because I am an asthmatic and also I have sleep apnea. The breathing machine will concentrate any poisons in the air in my bedroom.

My daughter just got bit 4 days ago. she went to the urgent care the day after because it changed so overnight. now there is a small puss bag in the center of a huge red circle. she is in extreme pain. the doctors have her on antibiotics, how long did it take you to get back to even partially normal? what antibiotics were you on? did your bite rot at all?

FIRSTLY, there are more than TWO poisonous spiders in the world. There are atleast 4 native to the U.S. Brown recluse, Black Widow, Hobo and Brown Widow. And there have been a few brought over on boats etc. There are a few different ones in Austailia and some of those are the MOST poisonous in the world. I am sorry for your suffering and don't mean to belittle it. Nearly all brown recluse bites are on the hands and feet(legs). I didn't say all I said nearly. My first was on my shin. I currently have my second bite between my toes. They are somewhat painful a day or so after the bite(which usually goes unnoticed). I will be going to the doctor for meds tomorrow. it is, in my opinion, very important to use an anti-biotic sauve until treatment is obtained. The biggest risk tends to be bacterial infection. The wound tends to be DRY as Joe stated. Meaning it won't have puss to sqeeze out. And I know someone out there will think they have a bite and say it oozed puss and had to be drained. That was probably staff infection. Which I guess could come from bacterial infection at bite site, but has nothing to do with the spider itself and probably could have been avoided by using the afore mentioned neosporin. These spiders aren't know for being fatal by any means but you NEED to get medical attention to avoid complications. Especially young kids and old people. I hope that this helps anyone that reads it. Good Luck.

My boyfriend got bitten by a spider. We were not able to identify it. We live in Wichita Falls, TX, near Oklahoma. So, I am not sure what kind of spiders we would have here. Well, he was bitten on his left side near his stomach. And has two small open marks, and the area got swollen, and he was in pain, and had a hard time sleeping. He went to the ER and they opened the area to drain it, and left something inside, like something he will need to pull out in 2 days. And hey gave him some antibiotics called Rifampin, and Clindamycin, and SMZ-TMP. He took them tonight. Right now, he says he has chills, and he when I touch him, he is hot. I think he has a fever. I have never dealt with this. Could he die? Will the antibiotics help it go away? How long do you think he will be this way? I am afraid. Thanks.

I am havin the exact same problem as you, the bite is right on my waste line and is very painful, it keeps getting larger and more painful as the hours pass. I've been to the doctor and they gave me a shot on my lower back (butt) and gave me antibiotics, they want to make me take steroids but I haven't been yet...
